Kimberley Dawn Kuhn

6/28/24 - Long time producer/ director Kimberley Dawn Kuhn (Irvine) passed away June 18 at age 48 following a battle with cancer. The 1996 BCIT Television Production graduate had a long list of broadcast producer and director credits and had been a director with Global BC for the last 25 years. A private service will be held for family and close friends on July 2nd in North Vancouver with a Celebration of Life to follow at a later date.  Dignity Memorial Obituary 

Corus Entertainment

6/26/24 - Corus Entertainment is shuttering All Traffic CKGO AM 730 Vancouver and 880 News CHQT AM Edmonton. Temporarily, AM 730 will simulcast CKNW AM 980 and 880 News will simulcast CHED AM 630 Edmonton. Corus hasn't yet announced whether it will return the broadcast licences to the CRTC or whether it’s seeking a buyer for either of the stations.  Connie Thiessen, Broadcast Dialogue

John White

6/25/24 - Courtenay BC based Vista Radio has named John White the new National Director of News, replacing Wendy Gray, who departed the company earlier this year. White has an extensive background that includes both local journalism and digital media. 6/24/24 - Global BC anchor/ reporter Sarah MacDonald is back on TV screens following a year of maternity leave. She anchors Global weekend newscasts and occasionally fills in on Global NationalGlobal National Video

6/22/24 - With The Peak CKPK-FM 102.7 Vancouver returning to the basic FM radio dial, management will have to be at its peak to give it staying power in a crowded alternative format market.  Claire Fenton, Daily Hive

6/21/24 - The weekly Steele and Vance show has come to an end after two years on CHEK-TV Victoria. Veteran broadcasters Lynda Steele and Jody Vance "brought an unrivalled suite of experience to the program, which immediately caught viewers’ attention". Johnny Michel

6/20/24 - Johnny Michel is leaving CBC Vancouver after 17 years as Managing Director, CBC English Services for B.C. and Alberta. Prior to joining CBC, Michel served as VP of Programming for Channel M (now OMNI Television) and VP, Production and Communications for BCTV (now Global) Vancouver and CHEK-TV Victoria.  Broadcast Dialogue 

Keith Cox

6/20/24 - Former Vancouver newscaster Keith Cox passed away June 3 in Victoria at age 66. He worked in radio from 1983-93 at Cariboo Radio CKCQ Quesnel, CJVI Victoria and from 1985-87 as a reporter/ anchor at CKNW Vancouver. Keith was the son of former BC Sports Hall of Famer, CKNW sportscaster Jim Cox, who passed away in 1998. Larry Updike

6/20/24 - Larry Updike, who did a short run at Rock 101 CFMI-FM Vancouver in 1994, has passed away at age 69. The longtime Winnipeg broadcaster died following a colon cancer diagnosis just one week ago.  Connie Thiessen, Broadcast Dialogue
Brad Maas

6/17/24 - Former Vancouver broadcaster Brad Maas has joined the Government of British Columbia as a Transportation Management Centre of BC Agent. The 2018 BCIT Radio Arts and Entertainment graduate was a traffic anchor at CityNews1130 CKWX Vancouver in 2018. Maas was most recently the GM at McDonald's in Langley.  LinkedIn Announcement

6/09/24 - Randene Neill, award-winning former Global BC journalist for nearly two decades, has been named the NDP MLA nominee for Powell River-Sunshine Coast. Nicholas Simons, the current MLA for the riding, has announced he would not be seeking re-election.  Sandra Thomas, Powell River Peak

6/09/24 - Long time Global BC producer and on-air contributor Negar Mojtahedi, who joined Iran International last month as a reporter/ host will host the first ever English podcast on Iran.  X Posting

6/07/24 - CKPK-FM 102.7 Vancouver, which moved its alternative format on The Peak to HD2 two years ago, has now moved it back to the main channel. Gone is the NOW! brand, as HD2 is simulcasting the main signal. Dylan Willows

6/06/24 - The Zone CJZN-FM 91.3 Victoria has announced that Dylan Willows, one of its longtime and most popular DJs, has lost his battle with cancer. He was on air there for over 20 years. 6/06/24 - Numeris Spring 2024 PPM ratings have been released for Vancouver and four other Canadian markets. CKNW AM 980 leads in A12+ with a 13.2% share. Virgin Radio CFBT-FM 94.5, Move CHQM-FM 103.5 and CFOX-FM 99.3 also show strong numbers.  Bray and Partners Overview

6/06/24 - Jack Morse has joined CityNews Vancouver as a videojournalist. He has held a similar role with CTV News Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown for the past two years.  X Posting

6/06/24 - Mitch Bunda has left Corus Entertainment Vancouver, where he’s served as the Chief Broadcast Engineer for the last five years. Bunda joins B.C. public broadcaster Knowledge Network as Director of Broadcast and Information Technology.  LinkedIn Posting

CTV Vancouver Island

6/06/24 - CFAX AM 1070, Virgin Radio CHBE-FM 107.3  and CTV News Vancouver Island will be moving their operations to a brand-new, state-of-the-art studio in the Esquimalt Town Square. The stations currently occupy a three-storey building in downtown Victoria. The move is expected to be completed by January 2025.  CTV News


6/03/24 - Call letters  CFDT-FM have been assigned for the new station in Squamish at 99.7 MHz with a proposed Adult Album Alternative (Triple A) format. The CRTC approved an application by Four Senses Entertainment Inc. last September. It will operate at a maximum ERP of 5,000 watts at an effective height above average terrain (EHAAT) of -349.9 metres.  CRTC Info

6/01/24 - CTV News Vancouver has won five Edward R. Murrow Awards in the International Large Market category. 5/31/24 - Numeris Spring 2024 ratings have been released for Victoria and four other Canadian Diary markets. CBC Radio One is #1 in Victoria for A12+ with a 22.0 share. The Zone CJZN-FM 91.3 and The Q CKKQ-FM 100.3 also show strong numbers.  Bray and Partners Overview

Bob Mackowycz Sr.

5/30/24 - (Updated) Legendary broadcaster and radio programmer Bob Mackowycz, Sr. passed away Wednesday morning at age 75 from a sudden and unexpected illness. Most of his extensive career was based in Toronto, but he eventually became a programming consultant and subsequently a co-owner of Shore 104 CHLG-FM (now The Breeze) Vancouver, which was sold to Astral Media in 2012.  Connie Thiessen, Broadcast Dialogue
BC Lions

5/30/24 - Sher E Punjab CKSP AM 600 Vancouver and the B.C. Lions have partnered up for the upcoming Canadian Football season to broadcast the game in Punjabi. The first game is this Friday, May 31. Pre-game starts at 6:30 and kickoff is at 7 p.m. The Lions made history last year when the team's first-ever game was broadcast in Punjabi.

5/29/24 - The BC Lions radio broadcasts are returning to CKNW AM 980 Vancouver, back to where they were from 1988 to 2003. The Lions switched to the now silent Team 1040 in 2004 and then to AM 730 CKGO in 2021. Mike McCardell

5/27/24 - The Last Word segment on CTV News Vancouver with host Mike McCardell has been on hold for the last week due to the passing of his wife Valerie. 5/27/24 - CBC Vancouver television designer Victor Miles passed April 6 at age 95. He left CBC in1986 to devote his time primarily to painting. A private family service has been held.  Sun/ Province Obituary

Webster Awards

5/23/24 - The Jack Webster Foundation is now accepting submissions for the 2024 Webster Awards, recognizing the best in B.C. journalism -- with some new and revised categories this year. The deadline is July 28.  Webster Release
Don Taylor

5/23/24 - As originally announced last October, veteran sports broadcaster Don Taylor has been inducted in the media category of the BC Sports Hall of Fame. He's kept listeners and viewers up to date in the world of sports for over forty years, including time with Sports Page, Sportsnet and TSN1040 and is currently the co-host of the Donnie and Dhali: The Team show on CHEK-TV Victoria.  X Posting  CHEK Release

Jim Fraser

5/17/24 - (Updated) Long time CKWX AM 1130 Vancouver host Jim Fraser passed away in Sechelt, BC Wednesday night from cancer at age 75 (age corrected). 5/14/24 - Former CityNews 1130 CKWX Vancouver anchor Tim James has announced he is joining the communications unit at Surrey Police Service. He's been a contract part-time communications / content creator with SPS since last September.  X Posting

Dee Lippingwell

5/11/24 - Veteran concert photographer Dee Lippingwell passed away Thursday at age 78. In addition to over 50 years of photographing music stars, she took numerous photos of local broadcasters. 5/10/24 - the B.C. Association of Broadcasters (BCAB) has awarded its Broadcast Performer of the Year to longtime The Zone CJZN-FM 91.3 Victoria morning show duo of Jason Lamb and Dylan Willows. Willows stepped away from the station in March following a recurrence of a rare ocular cancer he battled 20 years ago. Tchadas Leo of CHEK-TV Victoria, who hosts the station’s first-ever podcast Our Native Land, was named the Broadcast Performer of Tomorrow.

5/09/24 (Updated) - Multicultural radio trailblazer Shushma Datt has been named the B.C. Association of Broadcasters (BCAB) Broadcaster of the Year. Among her many achievements, she launched Spice Radio CJRJ AM 1200 Vancouver in 2005. Datt was also inducted as a member of BCAB’s Half Century Club along with former CKNW AM 980 talk show host Jon McCombConnie Thiessen, Broadcast Dialogue  Laura Brougham, CHEK News


5/09/24 - RPM: Where Radio People Meet held its biannual gathering of Vancouver broadcasters past and present last week. In addition to Jody Vance, Dee Lippingwell, Don Shafer and Larry Hennessey were inducted into the RPM Hall of Fame.

Angela Valiant

5/09/24 - Angela Valiant, who was released from the morning show at SONiC CKKS-FM 104.9 Vancouver last month, has posted a farewell to listeners. Rogers Radio told Daily Hive that Alex Carr will host the morning show in the interim and that news about the future lineup will be revealed in the coming weeks.  Amir Ali, Daily Hive

Katie DeRosa

5/07/24 - After 16 years as a print reporter, Katie DeRosa is moving into broadcasting. She reported for the  Victoria Times Colonist for 15-1/2 years and has been with the Vancouver Sun and Province for the last three. DeRosa starts as the new provincial affairs reporter with CBC Vancouver on May 27.  X Posting

5/06/24 - The Get Connected technology radio show hosted by Mike Agerbo has been cancelled by CKNW AM 980 Vancouver. The 10-11 a.m. Saturday show ran for two decades. Agerbo, who is the CEO & Executive Producer of GetConnected Media, indicates the station wants paid/ infomercial slots on the weekend.
Farhan Lalji

5/05/24 - Veteran Vancouver sportscaster Farhan Lalji is being inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame. He will be officially enshrined as part of the Football Reporters of Canada Grey Cup breakfast in Vancouver this November. In addition to serving as the Vancouver Bureau Reporter for TSN, Lalji has worked on the BC Lions’ radio broadcasts as pre and post-game host during its time on TSN 1040 and as a part time sports reporter/ anchor at CTV VancouverTSN Release

Ray Fitzwalter

5/05/24 - Former CBC Vancouver freelance cameraman Ray Fitzwalter passed away April 24 following a decade-long battle with Parkinson's disease. His body will be cremated and there will be no service.

Jody Vance

5/03/24 - Veteran Vancouver broadcaster Jody Vance has been inducted into the RPM Hall of Fame. The RPM Lunch, which was started by Red Robinson over two decades ago, is a regular lunchtime gathering of radio personalities, and continues to this day following Red's passing on April 1 last year at age 86. Vance has been a prominent local broadcaster since 1988 and currently co-hosts talk show Steele and Vance with Lynda Steele weekly on CHEK-TV Victoria.  X Posting
                                        Salt Spring Island

4/28/24 - Gulf Islands Community Radio has announced that its new station CHIR-FM 107.9 Salt Spring Island will likely be on air in May. It has now completed the link between studio and transmitter tower. The station will operate with a maximum ERP of 850 watts at 219.8 metres EHAAT. A rebroadcaster will operate at 102.1 MHz with a maximum ERP of 18 watts at 635.4 metres EHAAT.  CRTC Info

4/27/24 - CBC Vancouver anchor/ reporter Zahra Premji has announced her departure from the Corporation after 6+ years. She's joining Fraser Health in a communications role.  X Announcement

4/27/24 - Iconic Vancouver sportscaster Jim Robson says it's "a real shame" that the Sportsnet 650 CISL radio crew isn't calling Canucks games on the road. Robson called Canucks hockey games on radio and TV from 1970 until 1999.  Patrick Johnston, The Province

4/26/24 - Fraser Tuff & Christy Farrell are the new morning show hosts on JACK CJAX-FM 96.9 Vancouver. They replace Drex (Justin Chan), who left last week as Rogers Sports & Media makes changes to both JACK and alt rock sister station SONiC Radio CKKS-FM 104.9. 4/25/24 -The Donnie and Dhali Post Game Show airs for one hour after every Canucks playoff game on CHEK-TV Victoria, with Don Taylor, Rick Dhaliwal and Ryan Henderson showing post-game interviews and analysis. 4/19/24 - Victor Gouchee will be the new Chase Producer on CKNW AM 980 Vancouver starting May 6. The 2023 BCIT Broadcast Journalism graduate has been a producer of live radio shows and sports broadcasts on Sportsnet 650 CISL Vancouver for the past year and has experience as a technical director, shooter/ editor and sideline reporter for Roll.Focus.

John Shorthouse

4/19/24 - Veteran Vancouver sportscaster John Shorthouse will be calling games for TV for the first time. He'll be joined by Dave Tomlinson and Dan Murphy. Shorty says he's called 105 playoff games to date, but never on a TV broadcast.  Sonia Aslam, CityNews

4/19/24 - Former Global News executive Kenton Boston joins Canadian Men's Health Foundation as President and CEO. He joins following 17 years leading major news assets for Global and Corus Entertainment with several of them based in Vancouver.  CMHF Release

4/18/24 - Former Vancouver broadcaster Shirley McQueen is joining ICON Radio CKAY-FM 91.7 Gibsons. She was a morning swing host at Rock 101 CFMI-FM 101.1 Vancouver from 1998-2002. 

Angela Valiant

4/18/24 - SONiC CKKS-FM 104.9 Vancouver has dropped Angela Valiant from its morning show, with her name deleted from its website. In addition, content producer Andrew Berridge has announced his departure from the station to join 1-800-GOT-JUNK as a social media specialist.  LinkedIn Posting


4/18/24 - JACK CJAX-FM 96.9 Vancouver morning show host Drex (Justin Chan) and Assistant Content Director Corbet Rutzer have departed the station. Afternoon drive host Jason Manning is expected to take over mornings for the foreseeable future.  Connie Thiessen, Broadcast Dialogue


4/11/24 - Tom Plasteras has teamed up with Jamie Harrison to launch Verito Communications & Media Strategies. Plasteras was Senior Director, Brand and Programming for Corus Entertainment in Vancouver from 1993-2013 while Harrison was Senior Account Manager for Corus from 2013-24.  LinkedIn Posting

Robert Brimacombe

4/11/24 - Robert Brimacombe has left his position as Manager of Local Sales for Corus Radio in Vancouver after eight and a half years. He'll continue on as President of the BC Association of Broadcasters.


4/10/24 - Long time Vancouver sportscaster Joey Kenward has some good news. He underwent a cell transplant last month, followed by further treatments to treat leukemia, and was able to return home for Easter. Kenward is an account manager for Rogers Radio Vancouver and an on-air host at Sportsnet 650 CISL.  X Posting


4/05/24 - Former B.C. Lieutenant-Governor Iona Campagnolo, who was also a local broadcaster, has died at age 91. Among her numerous achievements, she hosted One of a Kind on CBC Television Vancouver from 1980-82. 4/03/24 - Vancouver radio host Leslie Stein has joined the staff at the newly branded OV 103.9 CKOV-FM Kelowna, which was recently acquired by Pattison Media. She co-hosts mornings with Kelowna Content Director Glenn Hicks. Beverley Wowchuck

4/03/24 - Former CBC Vancouver staffer Beverley Wowchuk passed away March 8th at age 76. She was a costume designer for the Beachcombers TV series for 10 years before leaving the Corporation to work in the TV and film industry, specializing in period movies as well as starting a period costume rental business. 3/28/24 - At a time when local news coverage is in decline, Global BC is expanding its late night newscast. Starting April 1, Global News at 11 will will increase from 30 minutes to a full hour. It will continue to be led by anchor/ reporter Jordan Armstrong, senior meteorologist Kristi Gordon, and sports director Squire BarnesAmy Judd, Global News/ Video

3/28/24 - Former BC premier Glen Clark, who was president and COO of the Jim Pattison Group from 2011-23, has temporarily taken over leadership at Victoria-based Overstory Media Group, replacing CEO and co-founder Farhan Mohamed.  Revolving Door, Broadcast Dialogue


3/26/24 - An obituary has been published for legendary CKNW reporter George Garrett, who passed away March 18 at age 89. He retired in 1999 after a 40+ year career which earned him numerous honours for his work. 3/22/24 - After two years as an on-call producer at CKNW AM 980 Vancouver, Layla Khdir has announced she has accepted a full-time producer position at CHED AM 630 Edmonton. 3/21/24 - Longtime media executive Kirk LaPointe has rejoined Glacier Media as a columnist, writing bi-weekly for Business in Vancouver and North Shore News. Among his many positions, he was a talk show host at Roundhouse Radio CIRH-FM 98.3 Vancouver from 2015-17.
CFUV-FM 101.9

3/20/24 - Victoria’s community radio station CFUV-FM 101.9 celebrates 40 years of exploring the city's music scene. Nestled inside the University of Victoria’s student union building basement, CFUV has been a mainstay of Victoria’s music scene since 1984.  Michael John Lo, Victoria Times Colonist


3/19/24 - Legendary B.C. reporter George Garrett died last night at age 89 following a battle with cancer. The former CKNW reporter retired in 1999 after a 40+ year career, where he was known for breaking big stories before anyone else. 3/17/24 - Retired CBC Vancouver TV Technical Producer Andrew Martens passed away February 21 at age 91. Among his numerous CBC accomplishments were producer of Hockey Night in Canada, the Summit Series in 1972 between Canada and the USSR and orchestrating the Royal visits for CBC. 3/15/24 - Classic Hits Coast FM CKAY-FM 91.7 Gibsons (Sechelt) has rebranded as ICON Radio, celebrating the icons of music, “from the classic hits that shaped radio’s foundations, to one hit wonders, to unforgettable anthems.” Longtime Rock 101 CFMI-FM morning host Brother Jake and former CISL AM 650 personality Gerry O’Day are included in the new on-air lineup.  Connie Thiessen, Broadcast Dialogue


3/14/24 - Veteran newscaster James Gardner has retired from CFAX AM 1070 Victoria. Gardner was one of the first broadcasters to transition on-air in 2012, starting his career as Sheila Gardner in Alberta 40+ years ago. 3/13/24 - Former Vancouver broadcaster Steve Parsons is being promoted to Vice-President of Programming, while also retaining his role as General Manager at Stingray Toronto. He will oversee brands, content, and overall programming strategy for the company's 101 stations in Canada. 3/13/24 - Long-time Victoria and Vancouver broadcaster Jeremy Baker is back where he began. On air as Ron Hill, he covered news and sports at CKVN (CFUN) in the early 1970s before departing for CFRW and CJOB in Winnipeg, continuing as a media and communications specialist, then returning west and founding the Men in UNITY ministry in Abbotsford in 2007.

With much of his career served at CKNW AM 980, Faux is still on the air as p.m. drive host at Wave 98.3 CIWV-FM.

1/06/24 - After a brief break from the news industry, former CHEK-TV Victoria News Director Scott Fee is returning to produce and anchor CHEK’s weekend newscast. He left Vancouver Island to anchor at Global Calgary, but returned to CHEK as the station’s ND in 2019, a position he held until 2023. His first newscast will be Saturday January 13.
